For the tax year 2010, the EITC will be adding a new category to their large list of qualifying US Citizens who may claim this credit. When the amount of the EITC covers any payments that you might owe to the IRS. Some families can qualify for almost 5,000.00 dollars in refunds with the EITC.

In previous years, the Internal Revenue Service had a qualifying EITC category for lower income people without kids, for people with one child living under their roof for longer than 6 months during the tax year, and a category for people with two or more kids in their care. For tax year 2010, people who have three or more kids under their care for longer than 6 months out of the year can apply for a larger credit than before.

Taxpayers with dependents living in their care do not have to be the birth parents to the kids. EITC is for qualifying grandparents helping their children by caring for their offspring, aunts who have taken their siblings kids to help during our hard times, or even an older brother or sister with their siblings in their care.

Foster care parents with kids placed into their custody by an approved agency are also eligible to claim an EITC if home steadily for longer than 6 months out of the income tax year. Any time that children spends exactly 6 months in each of two homes, the person who claims the EITC is the taxpayer most closely related to the child. Whenever a question of who is filing comes up, the parent is favored.

Foreign born people working in the US with a child or children in their home for more than 6 months out of the tax year also normally qualify to take their EITC money. One requirement is that the person claiming this EITC and all the kids involved must have the valid SS #’s that are required of all taxpayers in the United States of America. Other EITC rules may also apply to those who are born in other countries.

Earned Income Tax Credit is the name of the biggest refundable income tax credit that many common taxpayers can apply for. For people with children, this refundable large amount of money can mean the difference between an empty cookie jar and enough cookies to share with the other neighborhood children who drop in to play after school. With today’s economy so unsettled, people with children need to apply for this money.

The best place to prepare the IRS income taxes is online today. Tax preparation sites offer the quickest refunds and their software programs always ask users if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by asking the user a series of questions. Never skip this set of questions because the refund is worth up to $5,657 dollars to the taxpayers who meet all of the requirements to receive this much money.

To qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, taxpayers must have children living under their roof for at least six months in time out of the tax year. Or, they must meet lower income requirements that are set into a range that allows many taxpayers to benefit from. Taxpayers do not need to be the parents of the children who are living in their homes, and Foster Care arrangements do qualify to receive this money if they are agency placements.

United States citizens (and non-citizens) may apply for the EITC tax money if they have a valid social security number for themselves and all children claimed. The children must live with the taxpayer at least six months out of the year, and when there is a tie with another taxpayer having the child exactly six months out of the year too, the parent or closest relative is the one who claims the Earned Income Tax Credit on their paperwork.

The children who are claimed for the EITC tax money must be under the age of 18 years unless they are a full-time student. Taxpayers may claim a young adult student as a child up to age 23 for the Earned Income Tax Credit age requirement. Taxpayers who are married may not file for an EITC credit unless they are filing jointly with their spouse on their income tax returns.

Taxpayers without children can get up to $438 in EITC money. Those with one child to claim can get up to $3,043, those with two children can get up to $5,028, and those with three or more children can claim up to $5,657. When the tax return is done being prepared online, if the taxpayer uses the e-file option, this return is sent directly into the IRS computer system and the Earned Income Tax Credit money that is being issued on a refund will be available in your bank account as quickly as 8 days later in some cases.

The state tax is different from federal tax and each state has variations on the taxation system and the bylaws. There are several different sets of laws governing each state and this gives rise to a lot of smaller and larger differences in the way the taxes are meant to be filed in each state. There are a few states that exempt certain individuals like international students from having to pay taxes. Of course, not all states do this and hence what kind of a state tax you pay is completely dependant on the state you are located in.

The best way to find out more about the details of your state tax laws is online. You can go to your state government website and dig up all the information that you need to file your taxes. Earlier in time, it used to be a really long drawn process whereby each individual would get the fill-in forms and then start filing their return with these forms. In fact, many are still doing this because they do not know any better. Education about never tax filing methods still hasn’t reached them.

The IRS website has a lot of information that you might need plus it also a page with links to various participating states official website. If you are having trouble finding the websites, you can look here. The IRS also has information regarding the number and names of the states that are participating in the online tax filing service called e-file.

A lot of people still do not know that tax returns can be submitted online and the tax payment can also be made online. Thus a many still file their returns manually and waster valuable time and often make errors. It is also impossible to know about all the policies that may apply to you and hence often you may miss out on tax benefits like deductions and credits.

E-file your tax returns and tax extensions to be free of all the headaches associated with filing tax returns. It is really easy to use and there is absolutely no paperwork involved. This alone makes it worthwhile for most people. Individuals who have to prepare very complicated returns can save a lot of time and energy by using e-file to prepare them. The IRS has authorized a few good online service providers to provide taxpayers with the benefits of e-file.

With e-file and the superior tax softwares that these websites offer, you can prepare your returns in a fast and efficient manner. The software also helps you maximize your tax benefits by making sure that you have not overlooked at possible deduction or policy that may apply to you. It also helps you maximize your tax refund if you are eligible for it. E-file also allows for the advance tax payments to be made via credit cards so that your out-of-pocket expenses are lowered considerably. There are also options of scheduling the payment for a later convenient date. This is why more and more people are choosing to e-file their returns and pay their tax online.

The federal government of the United States levies the federal income tax and it is levied on every taxable earner of the United States. This includes the resident aliens and every earning individual who Adjusted Gross Income is above a stipulated level. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) handles the federal income tax levy and administration.

The taxable income of the person is determined by a two-tiered system. First the person’s actual income is determined and this is considered as the base of the calculation. Upon this net income, certain deductions are made to obtain the gross total income. Then the gross total income is adjusted with the itemized deductions list or the standard deductions list, whichever is deemed applicable to the individual in question. The deductions are what finally give the adjusted gross income or AGI. Any income tax applicable is then calculated on the basis of a person’s AGI.

The IRS follows the internal revenue code to determine taxable amounts and each year the taxable amount is changed and adjusted based on the inflation. There is a minimum AGI amount, below which a person will not have to pay tax. However, every earning member is expected to file a tax return.

As per the Internal Revenue Code, the returns can actually be divided in to tax returns and information returns. But the usual term used for both is ‘tax returns’ and it is often used to talk about both types of returns. Every person is expected to declare the tax liable assets that the person holds. The tax will thus be based on that. However, there are provisions under which a person can gain tax credits during filing tax returns. These credits are actually better than the deductions because tax credits are calculated after the tax is charged and not before. Hence, a deduction would mean a saving equivalent to the taxable percentage of the amount. Whereas, a tax credit means that the entire amount of the tax credit is saved. So at 17% tax, a $100 deduction saves you $17 but a $100 credit saves you the full $100.

Filing returns however can be very complicated and arduous. This can soon turn in to an uphill process if you are not sure which policies apply to you. Plus you will have to go through a lot of paper work to submit your federal income tax returns correctly. So the IRS has provided you with E-files. E-files is an electronic system of filing your tax return, which is also available from a few trustworthy IRS registered service providers.

With e-files there is absolutely no paper work to be done and you will be guided through the filing process. These combines eliminate any errors that you might have made during the filing process. It is also free for those with an AGI below $56,000 annually. This is a very safe and secure method of payment, which also alerts you of policies that may apply to you, there by reducing your tax returns.

The federal income tax is progressively imposed on the taxable income of all earning residents and resident aliens. The taxable income of a person is calculated on the basis of the gross total income. The gross total income is calculated by deducting certain elements from the net income of the person. These deductions can be things like an employer-paid health insurance. The gross total income is then taken through the itemized deductions list or a standard deductions list based on what is applicable for the individual being taxed.

The income tax is expected to be filed by the person before April 15 each year, which would be the income tax based on the adjusted gross income (AGI) of the previous financial year. Each financial ends in April and begins in May and so the tax is counted on the income through this period. The federal income tax is based on slabs and the amounts are adjusted against inflation each year. There is a minimum AGI amount, below which the person will not have to pay any tax and might even be eligible for EIC (Earned Income Credit). The federal income tax returns have to be filed despite of the amount earned and it is usually beneficial to apply because it helps avoid legal and financial complications later. There are also chances that you will be eligible for federal tax refunds.

Federal tax refunds happen when the return filed by the person shows that the person has paid tax in excess of the required amount. This often happens when the person does not know that he or she is eligible for a tax credit like EIC or child support, deductions, other policies etc. In this case the tax that has been collected is calculated for an excess and that excess is refunded to the taxpayer. This is what is known as a federal tax refund.

There are a few ways through which you can ensure that your tax refunds are maximized. This is mainly through informing yourself of the various tax options available in front of you. This is an area where e-filing and e-tax softwares can help you. These tools are very helpful in making your tax return filing process hassle free and uncomplicated.

It is a fast and easy way to pay your tax and it also minimizes the errors you can make which filing your federal income tax returns. You can also schedule payments with e-filing and make early filings in anticipation of your returns. There is no paperwork involved in e-files and that makes life a lot easier for the taxpayer. It is a fast, safe and secure way to file your tax returns.

There also other benefits like free e-files for those who have an annual AGI of below $56,000. This is a provision by IRS to help those who do not have a high amount of income. During your e-file process, the electronic tool will also tell you whether you are eligible for certain policies or not.

Much of the IRS administration has been shifting towards a paperless paradigm. Filing for income taxes used to be cumbersome and time consuming. That is because everything is done manually. The forms are sent to you on paper. You then have to fill in the forms (don’t forget your glasses) and send them back in time. If you fail to do so, you may be liable for certain penalties. Or if you make mistakes (e.g. forgot to send one particular form back), you will be prompted to repeat the process again.

And because filing for taxes manually can be a painful process, many people tend to put off completing the forms until the last minute. This only make matters worse. Some people may even forget about the filing deadline completely.

Today, filing for taxes can be handled differently. Through authorized IRS websites, you can choose to efile your taxes. In other words, you can file for taxes electronically rather than having to fill in a stack of forms. Here is how the process works.

1) Locate an authorized service provider.

You will be be able to see the IRS logo prominently displayed on the website. It is illegal to use this logo without the permission of IRS. So this is the first sign that you look out for when looking for efiling services. Don’t submit any information (not even emails) to any website without the IRS authorized logo.

2) Create an account.

If this is the first time you are are efiling your tax return, you will need to create an account. Again, everything is done electronically. To begin, all you need is your SSN number. Your SSN number will be your username. Choose a password that you will remember. If possible, do not write down your password. Memorize the password. If you have a poor memory, write down the password if you must but keep it away under lock and key. You must do everything you can to avoid revealing your password to anyone else.

Also, before creating your account, make sure that you are submitting information through a secure website. A secure website allows you to transmit sensitive information that is encrypted. Your browser will show a small little lock at the status bar, and your URL should show “https” instead of the usual “http”. Avoid efiling on wireless networks or public networks for security reasons.

3) Proceed to enter your information.

The efiling process is simple and straightforward. It’s designed to be a step by step system so that people who are not so tech savvy can also efile. To the layman, the efiling process will appear as a wizard. You will be asked to fill in specific fields before you can proceed to the next step. That way, you don’t have to worry about missing out certain fields. People tend to forget some sections when they file manually.

Once done, simply click submit and you are done!

Contrary to popular belief, efiling is a simple process. The main reason why most people don’t like to efile is because they are acting out of fear - fear for technology, and fear of the unknown. Most people are accustomed to filing for taxes the traditional way - using paper forms.

The problem with using forms to file for taxes is that there is a lot of room to make mistakes. Most of these mistakes are due to pure negligence, and can be easily avoided. When someone makes a mistake in the forms, that individual may be asked to file for tax returns again to rectify the mistake. By then, the deadline would have come and gone. If that is the case, the individual is liable for certain late penalties.

One way to avoid making mistakes is to efile. eFile helps to reduce mistakes because everything is very systematic. It’s almost like using a wizard on your computer. You are walked through the entire process in a step by step manner. If there are mandatory fields that you need to fill in, you won’t be able to complete the submission, and the software will prompt you to fill in the necessary information.

Sometimes, after filling in all the forms, you can check and recheck for mistakes. But when you want to send the forms out, you accidentally left one out. Again, that makes an incomplete submission. For sure, this won’t happen if you choose to efile. If there is some information that you need, and you don’t have it with you, you can always save your efile as a draft and come back to complete the process another time. All you need is your SSN number and your password.

Your password is issued to you when you create an account with an authorized IRS efile provider. You will be able to see the IRS logo on the authorized website. You only need to create an account if this is the first time you are efiling. After that, you can use back the same account to efile again and again. To create an account, all you need is your SSN number. That will be your user name. You will also be able to select your preferred password. Try to choose something that is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess. You don’t want anyone else to have access to highly sensitive information.

Once you have completed all the information, you will be able to submit your tax return directly to IRS using a secure connection. IRS will then process your tax return, and may even approve your tax refunds in as soon as 7 days. This is a level of efficiency that no paper system can duplicate.

So start efiling from this year onwards. You will find the process most efficient and convenient.

The time has come to file for income tax returns. The deadline is set at 15th of April. If this deadline is missed, the individual may need to pay certain penalties. The next deadline is October 15th. If your tax return has been rejected, you can file your tax return again by Oct. 15th, but the penalties will apply.

To avoid having to pay penalties unnecessarily, try to file your tax return on time. Many people file late because of several reasons.

1) Forget to file in time due to heavy workload.

This is perhaps the most common reason. Many people are busy with work. That is understandable because work and business provides income for the family. The problem is, it’s very easy to get caught up with work, and forget other important matters - like filing for income tax returns.

To make sure that you don’t forget, setup reminders that will help trigger your memory. Setup your smart phones, desktop apps, etc. to remind you of the upcoming deadline. The deadline is April 25th, midnight. So set the alarm to go off at least 14 days in advance to give you ample time to work on the filing. You must give yourself more time so that you can start digging for the necessary information as early as possible.

2) Didn’t receive the forms in time.

This is rare but it happens. Mail may sometimes be delayed, or they may be lost. In this case, the issue of filing for income tax returns never come up. And all the time you are wondering why the forms never turn up. Soon, the deadline would have arrived, and you find yourself not knowing what to do because you didn’t receive the forms.

If you don’t see the forms arriving in your mail box, don’t take a passive stance. Instead, take a more active approach. Go to the IRS website, make a phone call, and make a request for a new set of forms.

Better still, create an account with an authorized IRS website so that you can proceed with efiling. When you efiling, there is no need to fill in physical forms.

Do you know that you can now file for your tax returns and have everything sent to IRS in just a matter of hours? Today, with the help of technology, it is possible to achieve such amazing filing speeds. To complete and send your tax returns as quickly as possible, you have to turn to the Internet. Here are some additional tips on how you can file for your tax returns efficiently.

1) Use a high speed connection with a modern browser.

To have a smooth sailing efiling process, try to use a reliable broadband connection. Avoid using connections that are shared by hundreds of other users. That may slow down the submission process. If your Internet connection is unreliable (disconnects often), there is a risk of losing data that you have just entered. For the same reason, also try to avoid using wireless Internet connections when you are efiling.

2) Make preparations and have all the necessary information ready.

Everything pertaining to your income should be accessible when you are efiling. You will find yourself referring to those figures again and again as you are efiling. It will be a frustrating and cumbersome experience if you efile halfway, and then find that you are missing some key numbers. If that’s the case, all you can do is to save the efile as a draft, and return to it when you have the numbers.

3) Create your efile account as soon as you can.

The point of having an efiling account is to familiarize yourself with the efiling process. You don’t actually have to go through the efiling yet. All you need is your SSN number, which will be used as your user name. You can also choose a preferred password. Use the same login information every time you want to work on your tax returns. Logging in multiple times will help you remember your password better.

4) Decide on the right forms to use as early as possible.

The shortest form to use, is the 1040EZ form (2 page long). Most people will be using this form, but it is only for income levels that are below 100k per annum. If your income level is above 100k per year, use the 1040 form.

If you pick the wrong form to use, you may be asked to file for your tax returns again. This may lead to delays in tax refund approvals.

eFiling is so quick and simple that as soon as you submit your efile, your tax returns can be processed in as soon as 7 days. That means you will receive your tax refunds faster than ever. The quickest way to receive refunds from IRS is through direct deposit. Make sure that you have a valid bank account. If not, the refunds will be sent to you by check.
