IRS 2012 tax season opened on January 17 and income tax preparation is now a priority. But at lowest you can save on the considerable cost of possessing your return done for you. You can e-file your own income tax return free if you’re one of the taxpayers who qualify (most do). If you don’t qualify, there are other ways you can reduce your costs.

If your adjusted obscene income (AGI) in 2011 was $57,000 or less, then you qualify to use the IRS free file mini-site. This is a free tax preparation and digital filing site for those taxpayers who fall under the AGI limit which was developed by a partnership involving the IRS and tax computer software companies. If you qualify, you can find a free file organization thru the IRS.

If your Adjusted Gross Income is above the limit, you can still efile your federal tax return free thru on the net tax preparation companies – but you will have to pay to file your state tax return. So you need to consider how much filing your state tax return will cost. Of training, this isn’t a problem for those who live in a state with very low or no state taxes.

You can also use a Free File Fillable Form to do your submitting. This is like a paper tax return but you can fill it in online and file it free of charge, You do need to be able to prepare your own return, but you can use the free on the web tax estimation software and transfer the figures and you should have earlier tax returns as a guide, especially if very Little has changed. However, this also does not include your state tax return.

If your tax situation is complex, you can almost certainly justify the cost and might be safer with a tax preparer who is familiar with your particular situation and who has confirmed reliability. But you could try negotiating a lower price. Otherwise an on the web research will turn up several different companies whose costs may vary considerably. Again, these fees are based on an ordinary tax situation; anything more complex will attract extra prices.

You should also consider the qualifications and experience of the tax preparer and not just go for the lowest charges. Remember, you could be lured in by low advertised costs but could find oneself spending excess for services which would normally be included. Make sure up front exactly what will be included in the fee. Remember, you could find oneself paying a lot more in tax than the income you save by using an inferior tax prepare who makes a error with your income tax return.

Whatever you do, don’t go for a tax refund anticipation loan, as you will get your refund very quickly (usually within a week or two) thru e-submitting anyway if you elect to have the refund directly deposited to your account, and these are expensive options.

All in all, doing your taxes is not a task anyone genuinely looks forward to. But if you are organized and keep on top of it, you can pay very Tiny or even get your tax preparation free, and this makes the effort worthwhile,

Have you heard the joke that starts, “All state income taxes can be filed for free online…?” There is only a partial truth in that statement. Individual tax preparation businesses are allowed to offer free filings to people as a nice advertising gimmick. Unfortunately, each tax preparation site has a different set of qualifying rules that taxpayers must pass before being allowed to file taxes free.

Sample of sites that are filing state taxes online for free:

Tax Hawk claims that they will prepare, print, and file your taxes online free. This is claimed in very large letters at the top of their homepage. In reality, Tax Hawk will only file state taxes for free if your federal income tax adjusted gross income is less than 20,000. The Tax Hawk can be found for filing state taxes at: taxhawk.com .

Tax Slayer will prepare and file your state taxes for free if your total household income is less than 56,000 and one of these following things apply to you: 1) You are under age 25. 2) You are over age 65. 3) Your federal adjusted gross income is less than 10,000 dollars. 4) You can show a W2 form from the military. File at: taxslayer.com .

OLT On Line Taxes There is nothing not to like about the OLT free service for filing state taxes if you are not old enough to buy your own beer yet. But, once you’ve attended your own 21st birthday bash, OLT charges you for filing state taxes. Only kids file free at the OLT On Line Taxes site; age 20 and under. You can find OLT at: olt.com .

Turbo Tax Freedom will free prepare state taxes for people who have an adjusted gross income of less than 30,000 per household if they live in one of the 21 different states that are listed. All other states must pay 9.95 to have their state taxes prepared and filed by this service. For this choice in filing state taxes: turbotax.intuit.com

As you can see, it can be a frustrating experience to find a free way to file your state taxes online. At times, a state government page will list sites that offer free filing state taxes services for their people, but this does not apply to all states. If you go to an internet site called, ‘My Money Blog’ they have links to each state that has free online tax preparation information listed.

Each year, many people are in a hurry to receive their federal income tax refund and want to know exactly when the refund check will be delivered into their possession. Some years ago, the IRS got tired of answering all of those calls and installed an online system that monitors your tax return status, and an automated telephone service for this job.

How to find your tax return status online:

The IRS Internet site that handles the tax return status monitoring is called, Where’s My Refund. If you type those words into your computer search bar at the top of your computer screen and click ‘search’ the IRS site will be near the top of the search list that shows on your monitor. This is a very easy site for new computer users to use.

To find out what your tax return status is, enter your filing status as it appears on your taxes, your social security number or personal tax identification number, and the exact dollar amount of the refund that you requested on your tax papers. The results will show where your check is if the IRS has processed your taxes.

When there is no information about your filing in the monitoring system, this is normally because the IRS has not processed your taxes yet. For mailed filings, the IRS can take over 6 weeks to process the forms. If your tax papers were filed electronically, the IRS can take over 3 weeks to process your income tax refund.

If the tax return monitoring system shows your refund check as delivered, and you do not have your check, it is time to call the IRS offices quickly. The IRS telephone system is automated. To get to a real person to speak to, simply wait through their instructions until the machine tells you what number to push on your telephone.

According to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, each taxpayer is entitled to have all of their questions answered in a nice manner. The IRS is required to completely explain every question that you have about how the tax system works, and they must supply help for tax problems when needed. Your call to the IRS will be a pleasant experience.

How to find your tax return status by telephone:

To receive your tax return status by telephone, call the IRS Tax Refund Hotline at: 1.800.829.1954 . This is an automated system that works like the online tax refund monitoring system talked about above. You will be asked to enter your social security number, spouses social security number if filing jointly, the tax return filing status, and the exact dollar amount of the refund to receive the tax return status information.

The Federal Tax system is handled by the Internal Revenue Service or the IRS. The taxes are progressive and they are calculated using a very complicated system that is based on the Internal Revenue Code. The due amount of tax is payable by the 15th of April each year. Any delay or mistakes in filing the returns and paying the taxes can result in serious repercussions, including hefty fines.

To avoid having to pay fines and falling short of their federal tax expectations, many individuals pay tax in installments through out the year. Some also pay in advance in the anticipation of their tax amount. Although this ensures that there’s no overdue fine but do the tiered structure of the tax, it is not easy to predict the exact tax amount until the financial is near its end. This why people pay quite some extra in advance tax payments every so often.

Thus, the situation comes up where an individual had paid more than the final calculated tax amount. When a situation like this arrives, the IRS does not keep the extra amount, nor does it adjust it with the next year’s tax. It refunds the amount to the individual in question. This is what is known as a Federal tax Refund.

The situation where a person is eligible for a tax refund also arises due to various overlooked deductions and tax credits of which the person may not have been aware of when he was filing the return. This refund is thus a very important part of your tax-filing scenario. There are many ways to ensure a higher refund by checking for every possible deduction and tax credit that applies to you. There are several ways to view, track and maximize your refund.

If you have been paying tax in advance through the year, preparing your return properly can help you ensure maximum tax refund. But preparing your returns properly can be a major hassle, especially with all that paperwork that needs to get done. If your tax situation is a particularly complicated one, you have to spend a lot of time on your return to make sure everything is in order. The IRS has thoughtfully introduced the e-file system. This is a service by which you can file your tax online through the Internet.

The IRS has approved many private organizations for providing this service to the public. There are thus various websites online that offer e-file options through advanced tax software.

The federal government of the United States levies the federal income tax and it is levied on every taxable earner of the United States. This includes the resident aliens and every earning individual who Adjusted Gross Income is above a stipulated level. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) handles the federal income tax levy and administration.

The taxable income of the person is determined by a two-tiered system. First the person’s actual income is determined and this is considered as the base of the calculation. Upon this net income, certain deductions are made to obtain the gross total income. Then the gross total income is adjusted with the itemized deductions list or the standard deductions list, whichever is deemed applicable to the individual in question. The deductions are what finally give the adjusted gross income or AGI. Any income tax applicable is then calculated on the basis of a person’s AGI.

The IRS follows the internal revenue code to determine taxable amounts and each year the taxable amount is changed and adjusted based on the inflation. There is a minimum AGI amount, below which a person will not have to pay tax. However, every earning member is expected to file a tax return.

As per the Internal Revenue Code, the returns can actually be divided in to tax returns and information returns. But the usual term used for both is ‘tax returns’ and it is often used to talk about both types of returns. Every person is expected to declare the tax liable assets that the person holds. The tax will thus be based on that. However, there are provisions under which a person can gain tax credits during filing tax returns. These credits are actually better than the deductions because tax credits are calculated after the tax is charged and not before. Hence, a deduction would mean a saving equivalent to the taxable percentage of the amount. Whereas, a tax credit means that the entire amount of the tax credit is saved. So at 17% tax, a $100 deduction saves you $17 but a $100 credit saves you the full $100.

Filing returns however can be very complicated and arduous. This can soon turn in to an uphill process if you are not sure which policies apply to you. Plus you will have to go through a lot of paper work to submit your federal income tax returns correctly. So the IRS has provided you with E-files. E-files is an electronic system of filing your tax return, which is also available from a few trustworthy IRS registered service providers.

With e-files there is absolutely no paper work to be done and you will be guided through the filing process. These combines eliminate any errors that you might have made during the filing process. It is also free for those with an AGI below $56,000 annually. This is a very safe and secure method of payment, which also alerts you of policies that may apply to you, there by reducing your tax returns.

The federal income tax is progressively imposed on the taxable income of all earning residents and resident aliens. The taxable income of a person is calculated on the basis of the gross total income. The gross total income is calculated by deducting certain elements from the net income of the person. These deductions can be things like an employer-paid health insurance. The gross total income is then taken through the itemized deductions list or a standard deductions list based on what is applicable for the individual being taxed.

The income tax is expected to be filed by the person before April 15 each year, which would be the income tax based on the adjusted gross income (AGI) of the previous financial year. Each financial ends in April and begins in May and so the tax is counted on the income through this period. The federal income tax is based on slabs and the amounts are adjusted against inflation each year. There is a minimum AGI amount, below which the person will not have to pay any tax and might even be eligible for EIC (Earned Income Credit). The federal income tax returns have to be filed despite of the amount earned and it is usually beneficial to apply because it helps avoid legal and financial complications later. There are also chances that you will be eligible for federal tax refunds.

Federal tax refunds happen when the return filed by the person shows that the person has paid tax in excess of the required amount. This often happens when the person does not know that he or she is eligible for a tax credit like EIC or child support, deductions, other policies etc. In this case the tax that has been collected is calculated for an excess and that excess is refunded to the taxpayer. This is what is known as a federal tax refund.

There are a few ways through which you can ensure that your tax refunds are maximized. This is mainly through informing yourself of the various tax options available in front of you. This is an area where e-filing and e-tax softwares can help you. These tools are very helpful in making your tax return filing process hassle free and uncomplicated.

It is a fast and easy way to pay your tax and it also minimizes the errors you can make which filing your federal income tax returns. You can also schedule payments with e-filing and make early filings in anticipation of your returns. There is no paperwork involved in e-files and that makes life a lot easier for the taxpayer. It is a fast, safe and secure way to file your tax returns.

There also other benefits like free e-files for those who have an annual AGI of below $56,000. This is a provision by IRS to help those who do not have a high amount of income. During your e-file process, the electronic tool will also tell you whether you are eligible for certain policies or not.

The Federal Income Tax is imposed by the federal government of the United States of America on the taxable income of the residents and tax paying individuals of the country. The federal income tax was first levied during the times of the civil war. After the civil war was over, the tax was again levies around the 1890s. It was again imposed when the 16th amendment was ratified in 1913. The current income tax guidelines are in Internal Revenue Code that was amended in 1986.

The income tax structure in the United States in not a very easy one to understand. It is quite a complicated process that progressively taxes the income of earning members of the society. The taxable amount is usually not the same as the entire earned income. The due income tax is based on the adjusted gross income or the AGI. The AGI is calculated by deducting items from the Gross Income. The gross income is the total income is also no the total income, it is the total income minus any of the permissible deductions that have been declared as not necessary to be declared by the taxpayer. This includes the some insurance deductions like employer-paid health benefit plans and income from tax –exempt bonds, etc.

The gross income is then subjected to the list of itemized deductions or standard deductions; whichever is greater in the case of the individual. Certain charity donations, medical expenses etc. are taken as deductions. There are also tax credits, which are more valuable than these deductions because tax credit is usually applied after the tax rate. So a tax credit saves the taxpayer more money than deductions. For example, if a deduction was of $100 with a 15% tax rate then the savings would be just $15 but with a tax credit of $100 the savings would be $100.

Tax filing is the process of the paying the tax returns and this is also a complicated process. It involves a lot of calculations and paper work. There are a lot of areas which need careful handling because of the possibility of making a mistake. This is why many taxpayers prefer to file their returns online or electronically through a system know as e-filing. E-file is an option given by the IRS to the taxpayers to file their returns electronically. This eliminates a lot of the usual problems that are associated with filing tax returns.

There are a lot of added benefits in e-filing such as getting to know about policies that may apply to you. There is no paperwork involved so there are fewer chances of making a mistake in your tax return. Plus the IRS has also engaged a few private organizations to arrange for free e-file. This option is open only to those taxpayers who have an AGI of less than $56,000. This option makes it easier for a lot of low-income people to avail tax benefits by being able to pay tax electronically.
